The word civil means ordinary citizens and their concern. It is the antonym to the word military. Whereas word engineer is derived from Latin word “ingeniare” mean, to create or invent. The Civil Engineer is defined as the person who creates or invents things of the concerns of civilians.
Civil Engineering is the oldest profession next to military. Initially, people who perform civil works were called Military Engineers, which then differentiated into a separate discipline. Everything other than the military was termed as Civil Engineering. Therefore, the Civil Engineering has a very broad spectrum. It is the mother of all other fields.
From your residence to offices, educational institute to hospital, roads, railways, airports, bridges, tunnels, drinking water facility and drainage system, dams, storages, industrial buildings, power plants, satellites, marine structures, remote sensing to GIS, land use to air navigation everywhere you will find Civil Engineer’s hand. The present world infrastructure is the creation of Civil Engineer.
Civil Engineer first workout the feasibility of the project in terms of sustainability, environment, and economical aspect. He or She plans the basic layout and analyzes it for applied physical forces exerting on it. On the basis of analysis, he workout member sizes and thickness, materials, strength, and capacities. This design is brought into reality by civil engineers at site. He makes effort to make structures sustainable to natural calamities such as wind, earthquake, snow, rain, flood, fire and impact loads.
Civil Engineers are trying to bring innovations in construction materials. The use of Fiber significantly improves properties of reinforced concrete. Reuse of material is another aspect under consideration. Civil Engineers are focusing on energy efficient, self-sufficient and environmental friendly structures with the sustainable use of material and energy.
No one can deny the importance of it.
Civil Engineering has significantly improved our lifestyle. The high-rises accommodate the gigantic population. Highways, bridges, tunnels, railways, harbors, and airports made travel easy, safe and fast. Dams, storage tanks, reservoirs, drinking water plant and supplies enable us to save, store and drink good quality water at tap turn. Drainage system, wastewater treatment plant and solid waste management protect us from environmental pollution.
Urban and town planning shaped a beautiful and civilized society for us. We can dress up with fine fabrics woven at textile industries. We have mills for grinding and refining of wheat, rice, sugar, and grains. We have industries for heavy vehicles, equipment, machinery, furniture and other usable.
We have different kinds of maps of the globe, by which we may locate a place, but also classify its geological, geographical and seismic data. Remote sensing and satellites enable us to view and survey a land at distant locations. Educational institutes and universities offer Civil Engineering courses all over the world.
It is continuously developing. Civil Engineering is not going to be old-fashioned or outdated anytime. We will need Civil Engineer all the time, whenever we need progress and development. In short, it is difficult to imagine life without civil engineering.
Civil Engineering in today’s world is the most fantastic and innovative in terms of building structures. The examples are the construction of the tallest building in the world “The Burj Khalifa” in Dubai which is 828 meters tall, the construction of Palm Jumeirah in Dubai which consist of amazing modern villas. That marks the unlevelled existence of the words civil engineering.
